Thousands of people took to the streets of Slovakia’s major cities on Tuesday to continue their protests against Robert Fico’s government’s plans to dismantle the special prosecutor’s office overseeing high-profile corruption cases, reduce penalties for corruption and weaken whistleblower protections.
As “European Truth” writes, this is reported AP.
Organizers of the protests, led by the opposition, reported that rallies took place in the cities of Kosice, Presov, Poprad, Banska Bystrica, Zilina, Nitra, Trnava, Trencin, Spiska Nova Ves, Liptovsky Mikulas and Povazska Bystrica.

During the rallies, people repeatedly chanted “We’ve had enough of Fico.” Protests in Slovakia began to gain momentum on December 7, when people took to the streets of Bratislava.
According to the chairman of the leading opposition party Progressive Slovakia, Michal Šimečka, the legislative changes planned by the government will lead to an amnesty for the mafia and corrupt people.
Previously Šimečka statedthat the opposition is determined to continue protests until the government withdraws the “pro-mafia package.”
The prime minister’s attempts to reform legislation that could potentially violate EU norms were also sharply criticized by Brussels. The European Commission urged Slovakia not to rush into changes and threatened it with legal action for violating the law.
In a country of 5.4 million people, thousands of people are already took part in protests in several cities. The largest number of people gathered in Bratislava – about 10-15 thousand.
Social activists and organizations are also mobilizing, notably For a Decent Slovakia, which organized protests in 2018 following the murder of Slovak investigative journalist Jan Kuciak, which ultimately led to Fico’s resignation as prime minister.
The European Commission previously sent a letter to the Minister of Justice of Slovakia, in which warned the Slovak government from plans to liquidate the Special Prosecutor’s Office.
