LEE VALLEY – Slovak water slalom representative Zuzana Paňková advanced to the C1 semi-finals at the World Championships in British Lee Valley.
The 18-year-old canoeist won a place in this discipline for Slovakia at the 2024 Olympic Games. It was awarded to the twelve best countries on the Olympic channel from 2012.
Paňková performed a flawless ride and the second part of the track was her best, where she was faster than the first Monica Doriová from Andorra. In the end, she took the eighth place and fell short of the advancement limit by 1.85 seconds.
Among her two compatriots, Emanuela Luknárová was closer to the final, she ran out of energy in the second half of the race, collected four penalty seconds at the very end and took 15th place. She was 5.08 s short of the tenth Brazilian Ana Satilová. Another Slovak, Soňa Stanovská, reigning world champion in C1 under 23, did not perform an ideal ride. She caught the first two at the beginning of the channel and finally it was enough for the 18th place.
In addition to Slovakia, Andorra, the USA, Australia, the native British, the Czech Republic, Germany, Brazil, Spain, Italy, Ukraine and Slovenia secured Olympic participation in Lee Valley. One more place will be given to the best country from the EC, which failed to advance to the WC.
The specific athlete who will represent Slovakia at the 2024 Olympic Games is decided by an internal nomination. It consists of the world championship and the results of the world cup events in La Seu d’Urgell and Paris.
