Heger took this step after the departure of Agriculture Minister Samuel Vlčan (Ordinary people and independent personalities) and Foreign Minister Rastislav Kácer (Democrats) from the cabinet.
“I offered Mrs. President alternatives that would be more stable and less risky, such as the creation of a caretaker government. Madam President did not accept my proposals,” said Heger. “I have therefore decided to ask the President to remove her authority and to give the President room to try to lead Slovakia to democratic parliamentary elections in a stable and calm manner with the caretaker government,” added Heger.
According to the Slovak media, the current deputy governor of the National Bank of Slovakia, Ľudovít Ódor, who was formerly an advisor to Prime Minister Iveta Radičová, should head the caretaker government.
Last September, the Freedom and Solidarity party of ex-Minister of the Economy Richard Sulík left the government coalition, and Heger’s cabinet became a minority. In mid-December, the Slovak parliament expressed no confidence in him. Heger’s government has been acting as a temporary cabinet since then. Early parliamentary elections will be held in the country on September 30, 2023.
