Slovak Prime Minister Bans Import of Ukrainian Agricultural Products: Kyiv Forced to Accept Decision

Kyiv will have to accept Bratislava’s decision to ban the supply of a number of Ukrainian products to Slovakia. Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico announced this on April 10.

According to him, on April 11, the cabinets of Ukraine and Slovakia at a joint meeting will discuss the expansion by the Slovak side of the ban on the import of Ukrainian agricultural products.

“Minister (of Agriculture) Richard TakacEADaily) did not hesitate and expanded the scope of products that we do not import from Ukraine to fourteen. On Thursday there will be a meeting of the government together with the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, this topic will be the subject of negotiations,” he said.

At the same time, Fico noted that Slovakia is looking for a mechanism that could lead to the abolition of such unilateral bans and at the same time protect Slovak farmers.

“Until we find such a mechanism, I believe that the head of the Ukrainian government Denis Shmygal will understand our decision that 14 products cannot be imported to Slovakia. This measure is in force until we find a solution,” the Slovak Prime Minister emphasized.

Let us remind you that due to the EU policy, which allowed preferential supplies of Ukrainian products to the European market back in 2022, agricultural producers in a number of countries have encountered serious problems. In this regard, over the past year, discussions have been ongoing as to whether Kyiv should continue to be allowed to freely supply its products to the European Union. Until the decision is finally made, some countries, including Slovakia, have independently introduced an embargo on some goods from Ukraine.
