Fica was detained by police last December 16 at the beginning of an anti-government protest, during which protesters’ cars drove through the streets of Bratislava. The ex-prime minister was detained and charged with calling on residents to take part in an anti-government operation during the declared state of emergency, assembly ban and curfew.

He was released a few hours later. “The police were ashamed of the dirty work they had to do because they ordered them to do so,” the chairman of the Opposition Party said at the time. “This is what live broadcast democracy looks like,” Fico said, adding that he denied the allegations. He claimed that the aim of the police was to prevent his participation in the protest. In the end, it happened anyway.

Police spokesman Michael Szeiff said the prosecutor had dropped not only the former prime minister’s accusations, but also the police’s own resolution to prosecute incitement.
