Slovak PM resigns over Covid-19 vaccine scandal / Article / LSM.lv

The Prime Minister of Slovakia, Igor Matovič, has resigned. The reason for the resignation was his decision to purchase the Covid-19 “Sputnik V” vaccine developed in Russia.

Matovich informed that he would initially exchange positions with his party member – the Minister of Finance. At the same time, consultations will begin on the formation of a new ruling coalition and a cabinet.

On Monday, March 29, the new Prime Minister is also scheduled to hold consultations with the President.

Meanwhile, political experts allow the possibility that cardinal changes in the cabinet are not expected, because Matovich’s resignation was put forward by 2 other ruling parties as a precondition for maintaining the current coalition. None of the four coalition parties wants early parliamentary elections, as the opposition Social Democrats could win.

CONTEXT:

The government crisis was caused by Matovich’s decision to buy two million doses of Sputnik V vaccine from Russiawithout consulting the other members of the government. Other coalition partners considered that the vaccine could not be purchased until it had been approved by the European Medicines Agency.

Because of this prime minister’s decision resignation announced Slovak Minister of Foreign Affairs Ivan Korčok and Minister of Education Branislav Grolling, Minister of Health Marek Krajči also resigned, who is a member of Prime Minister Matovich ‘s party, as well as the Minister of Labor, the Minister of Economy and the Minister of Justice.
