Slovak Government Increases Border Security to Curb Migration

The new Slovak government has sent hundreds of police to the border with Hungary to prevent an increase in migration into the country, Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported yesterday, October 30, citing Slovak Interior Minister Matus Szutai-Esztok.

In addition to police forces, military personnel will patrol the border, noted the head of the Slovak Ministry of Internal Affairs.

“We will use enormous forces,” he emphasized.

Newly elected Prime Minister of Slovakia Robert Fico visited the border crossing with Hungary, saying his government was “very concerned about the deteriorating refugee situation.”

“If illegal migration is not brought under control, then dangerous individuals associated with terrorist structures may enter here. These dangerous individuals can create gigantic problems for us. What is happening in the Gaza Strip will create gigantic security risks for Slovakia,” the prime minister said.

As AFP notes, the flow of refugees to Slovakia has recently been steadily growing, primarily from Serbia and Hungary.
