Slovak Football Representative László Bénes Scores in German Cup Match, Saarbrücken Continues Surprising Run

Slovak football representative László Bénes scored a goal in Wednesday’s round of 16 match of the German Cup, but it was not enough for Hamburg to advance past Hertha Berlin. The guests led 2:1 in regular time and 3:2 in overtime, but eventually were eliminated after a shootout.

Twenty-six-year-old Bénes prevailed in the 43rd minute when he made it 2:1 for Hamburg. However, Hertha equalized in the 90th minute and forced extra time. In it, the guests again led, but the Berliners managed to equalize again, this time Jonjoe Kenny did it in the 120th minute. Bénes also converted his attempt in the shootout, but the visitors ended up losing 3:5.

The football players of Saarbrücken provided another big surprise. After sensationally knocking out Bayern Munich in the 2nd round, they went through another Bundesliga player, Eintracht Frankfurt, on Wednesday, beating them 2:0 at home. The players of the third-league club have already made it to the quarter-finals of the cup competition. They won 2:1 over Bayern at the beginning of November, when they turned around from 0:1, and Marcel Gaus arranged their progress in the sixth minute of added time.

They had more control of the match against Frankfurt. The first goal from the 20th minute was disallowed by VAR due to a foul, but Kai Brunker put them in the lead after an hour of play, and Luca Kerber made it 2:0 in the 79th minute. The visitors finished at ten when Noel Futkea saw red in the end.

In the hit of Wednesday’s cup program, Stuttgart won over Borussia Dortmund 2:0 thanks to goals from Serhou Guirassy and Silas. The home team extended their winning streak in all competitions to four games.
