Defenseman Martin Gernát will not be available to the Slovak hockey team at the WC in Riga and Tampere. An abdominal muscle injury prevented him from participating in the championship. Adam Jánošík will replace him in the squad, the Slovak Ice Hockey Association (SZĽH) announced on Tuesday.
Gernát from the Swiss HC Lausanne was injured last week in Slovakia’s first friendly match against Austria in Kapfenberg after crashing into the open door of the opponent’s substitute. Although initially the examination did not show a complicated injury, the situation changed.
“Re-examination revealed that he had torn his abdominal muscles after the training load. Such an injury does not allow him to start at the World Championships.” explained team doctor Pavol Lauko for hockeyslovakia.sk.
Thirty-year-old Jánošík from the Czech extra-league team BK Mladá Boleslav was originally dropped from the squad in preparation for the World Cup at the beginning of May. With 96 starts in the most valuable jersey, he will be among the most experienced players in Craig Ramsay’s selection at the championship. The Slovak national team will start the WC on Friday, May 12 with a match against the Czech Republic.
