Slovak Central Bank Governor Sentenced to Prison for Bribery Charges

“In the event that the execution of the financial penalty could be deliberately thwarted, the court also imposed an alternative sentence of two years’ imprisonment on the defendant,” said Katarína Kudjaková, spokeswoman for the specialized court.

According to the court, Kažimír is guilty of bribing the former president of the financial administration, František Imrecze. The former director of the financial administration stated that Kažimír handed him an envelope with a bribe of 50,000 euros (1.2 million crowns) as a “courier”.

In the past, Kažimír was the Minister of Finance and vice-chairman of Robert Fico’s Direction-Social Democracy party. From the beginning, Kažimír claims that he is innocent.

Slovakia is a member of the Eurozone. Kažimír is also a member of the Board of Governors of the European Central Bank (ECB), which determines monetary policy in the eurozone.
