A specialized criminal court in the Slovak city of Pezinok acquitted a businessman accused of organizing the murder of journalist Jan Kuciak and his fiancée in 2018 for the second time.
According to the statement of the court, the involvement of Marian Kotsner in the organization of the murder “has not been proven”. At the same time, his ally Alena Zsuzova was admitted to the murders and sentenced to 25 years in prison.
The International Press Institute called the acquittal “shocking.” It is noted that the case has not yet been closed, because the prosecutor’s office and the defendants can appeal. Note that the prosecutor’s office demanded a life sentence for the businessman.
Recall that Kuciak and his fiancee were killed in 2018. He investigated the mafia receiving EU funds for growing organic plants. It is also known that the mafia established contacts with Slovak politicians in order to further influence the distribution of European funds.
After Kuciak’s assassination, Slovak Minister of Culture Marek Madarich, Slovak Interior Minister Robert Kaliniak and a number of officials resigned.
According to investigators, multimillionaire Marian Kochner gave the order to kill Kuciak because of his journalistic activities.
