Part of the Sloterweg in Sloten will be closed to all motorized traffic from 1 July. The board of the Nieuw-West district decided this today. There is an exception for the emergency services, but not for the time being for people living in the immediate vicinity of the street.
The so-called cut will be at the intersection with the Ditlaar and will make the Sloterweg a dead end. This means that part of the local traffic will have to detour. According to the board, action must be taken quickly, because the road is currently too dangerous.
The Sloterweg has been considered one of the most dangerous roads in the city for years. Plans to close the road to through traffic were made last January approved by the city council. A system with license plate recognition should ensure that motorists who drive on the street, but do not live in the area, receive a ticket.
Delay
The cameras were already hung up, but in November last year suddenly sand got into the engine of the plans. Alderman Melanie van der Horst then left in a letter to the council that the number plate recognition method was not yet reliable and had to be further developed. In January it became clear that the introduction of the system was therefore would be delayed for months.
The board of the Nieuw-West district is taking the measure after recent accidents between cars and cyclists on the Sloterweg-West. “The urgency to make the situation safer is high,” says district administrator Nazmi Türkkol. “We must not allow anyone to be damaged for life again, or worse, for the sake of keeping the road open. The smart access, which only allows vehicles with a permit to use the road, will not be available until the end of 2023. The dangerous traffic doesn’t wait.”
The driving ban is indicated with signs and digitally enforced with a camera, the municipality says. Bicycles with pedal assistance and moped riders are allowed to continue driving.
