Arne Slot believes that reinforcements are needed quickly at Feyenoord in the rearguard and in midfield. After Dávid Hancko was injured in the cup match against PEC Zwolle (3-1), the trainer could only conclude on Thursday that the flush is now too thin.
Hancko’s failure was the only blemish on Feyenoord’s cup evening, which has not had Gernot Trauner for a long time. Slot currently only has two options in the center of the back: Jacob Rasmussen and Lutsharel Geertruida.
“I will have to call the promises tomorrow that someone has to join, because we have no defenders left,” said 44-year-old Slot afterwards in front of the camera of ESPN.
Shortly after the cup match, Slot could not say whether Hancko will be out of circulation for a longer period of time. The Slovak left the field with a lot of pain in his shoulder. “It could be a nerve in which he lost feeling for a while. But it could also be a muscle or band. The latter would be less positive.”
The trainer also hopes to welcome a new player in midfield – despite the fact that Mats Wieffer showed himself against PEC with a goal and an assist. “That wish has nothing to do with the qualities of Mats, but with the numbers,” said Slot.
“Because if Mats had dropped out as a defensive midfielder, there would have been a player who has been playing as an attacking midfielder or left winger for three years, namely Mo Taabouni. And the same applies to Orkun Kökçü. The numbers are just slightly problematic.”
Due to the win over PEC Zwolle, Feyenoord will go into the eighth finals of the TOTO KNVB Cup on Saturday. Coming Sunday, the leader of the Eredivisie in the competition will visit FC Groningen.
