Slightly more tourists than last year, but foreign tourists stay away | Inland

In the same period last year – when the corona pandemic had just started – 800,000 foreign guests were involved. By way of comparison: in the spring of 2019, 5.9 million foreign tourists stayed overnight in the Netherlands.

The number of Dutch guests was almost back to pre-pandemic levels in the second quarter of this year, according to Statistics Netherlands: 7.3 million Dutch guests stayed in accommodations in those months, about the same as in the same period in 2019.

Especially in the provinces of Friesland and Zeeland, the loss of foreign tourists was compensated by the Dutch holidaymaker. In Zeeland, the number of Dutch guests rose by 71 percent compared to the second quarter of 2019 to 653,000, in Friesland by 10 percent to 496,000. As a result, the decrease in the total number of overnight stays was limited to about 12 percent in Zeeland and about 10 percent in Friesland. Noord-Holland, which contains the tourist attraction of Amsterdam, had to accept 68 percent fewer guests in the second quarter than in the same period in 2019.
