Slight increase in Covid cases detected in Edomex

TOLUCA, Mex., August 12 (EL UNIVERSAL).- Authorities from the Ministry of Health in the State of Mexico have detected a slight, non-significant increase in SARS-CoV-2 cases in the last two weeks; however, compared to 2023, there is a decrease of 52.2 percent in suspected cases and 40.9 percent in confirmed cases.

Epidemiological surveillance of Covid-19 and other respiratory diseases is being maintained in the State of Mexico and so far, it is within the expected estimates, authorities from the State Health Secretariat pointed out.

For this reason, the use of face masks is not mandatory in public spaces, only for those who present symptoms of respiratory illnesses, acknowledged the Secretary of Health of the State of Mexico, Macarena Montoya Olvera, in an interview during her last public visit to Tlalnepantla.

From January 1 to August 5, 2024, Epidemiological Week number 31, 2,730 suspected cases, 868 confirmed cases, and 4,389 negative cases have been registered in the entity, which is why the state health sector maintains monitoring of confirmed cases of SARS-CoV-2 virus through the Sentinel Epidemiological Surveillance, indicated authorities from the State of Mexico Health Secretariat.

According to the IRAG Network platform, hospital occupancy as of August 5, 2024, is at 96.3 percent availability in general beds and 98.3 percent availability in beds with ventilators.

The most affected age groups are those over 70 years of age, followed by those between 30 and 34 years of age, 31 to 35 years of age, 25 to 29 years of age and 51 to 55 years of age. Therefore, if any symptoms of respiratory illness appear, it is essential to avoid self-medication and go immediately to the Health Center to receive timely care and treatment.

Regarding deaths from SARS-CoV-2 as of epidemiological week 31, the fatality rate in the State of Mexico is 3.2 percent, lower than the national rate of 3.8 percent.

The State of Mexico Health Secretariat reminds of the importance of applying the following prevention measures:

Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after being in public places, coughing, sneezing or blowing your nose.

If soap and water are not available, use 70 percent alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

Use of face masks in closed or poorly ventilated spaces if you have respiratory symptoms.

Cover your cough or sneeze with the inside of your arm or a disposable tissue and wash your hands immediately.
