Sleeping Well on Weekends Reduces Risk of Heart Disease, Study Finds

Medical study Haditha advises to sleep well during the weekend

A recent Swedish medical study indicated that sleeping for long periods during the weekend prevents the risk of death from heart disease. The study was conducted by researchers at the Karolinska Institutet in Sweden, and was published in the Journal of Sleep Research. The researchers explained that people usually sleep for short periods throughout the week, amounting to five hours a day, less than the normal rate of sleep, which is estimated at seven or eight hours.

The researchers added that lack of sleep at night puts people mostly at risk of developing and dying from cardiovascular diseases. The researchers followed the cases of 43,880 people under the age of 65 over the 13-year study period.

The researchers found that people who continued to sleep as short as five hours a day, even on weekends, were more likely to die from heart disease.

In contrast, they found that people who made up for their short sleep periods throughout the week by sleeping nine hours a night on weekends were less likely to die from heart disease.

The team said that its study proves that sleeping for long periods during the weekend can compensate for the severe lack of sleep rates that people usually experience during their regular working days.
