It is probably the “ballet par excellence”: “Sleeping Beauty”, staged in 2019 at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan with choreography by Rudolph Nureyev and performances by the étoile Polina Semionova in the role of the princess Aurora and Timofej Andrijashenko as Prince Désiré. An appointment that Rai Cultura offers on Thursday 4 January at 9.15pm on Rai 5. Felix Korobov will conduct Tchaikovsky’s extraordinary score. Alongside Aurora and Désiré, the evil fairy Carabosse (played by Beatrice Carbone), The Blue Bird and Princess Fiorina (Claudio Coviello with Vittoria Valerio) and the interpreters of The Pas de Cinque: Virna Toppi and Nicola Del Freo, Alessandra Vassallo, Gaia Andreanò, Caterina Bianchi. With costumes by Oscar winner Franca Squarciapino, designed for La Scala in 1993. TV direction is by Arnalda Canali. Twelve years after the previous performances, the ballet returned to the Piermarini from 26 June to 9 July 2019. It arrived at La Scala for the first time in 1966 with choreography by Marius Petipa, reworked by Nureyev, who took on the role of Principe together with Carla Fracci in the role of Princess Aurora. Nureyev’s successful and complex choreographic reinterpretation will continue to be performed at La Scala over the years, until the recent staging in 2019. Nureyev maintains the extraordinary purity of Petipa’s original choreography, but with a new theatrical and dramatic breath, an internal motivation and notable variations, a complex and composite choreography that reveals all the psychological nuances of the characters.
