Researchers say sleeping at least 5 hours a night would reduce the health problems adults over the age of 50 may face.
Worsening health conditions cause sleep disturbances, but lack of sleep can be a sign of health problems.
There is evidence that sleep helps maintain, rest and regenerate the cells of the body and mind.
The study tracked the health and sleep of government employees in Britain and asked a group of 8,000 participants the following question: How often do you sleep per night? Some put hours of sleep tracking.
They have been tested for chronic diseases such as diabetes, cancer and heart disease for two decades and the results were as follows:
- Those who slept 5 hours or less by age 50 had a 30% higher risk of developing various health problems than those who slept 7 hours.
- The study found that poor sleep was also associated with a higher risk of death, due to a higher incidence of chronic disease.
Researchers from University College London and the University of Paris recommend sleeping 7 to 8 hours.
Why do we sleep?
Scientists don’t know the truth about sleep. But it clearly helps the brain process memories, calms mood, concentration and metabolism.
Sleep gives the brain a chance to get rid of waste.
Tips for sleeping well
- Tired of work and activity during the day, but slow down as sleep approaches
- Avoid naps
- Maintain a monotonous sleep habit and make sure your bedroom is comfortable, thick curtains, the right temperature and a comfortable mattress and don’t get caught by your smartphone in bed.
- Avoid caffeine and alcohol before bed
- If you can’t fall asleep don’t force yourself, don’t get nervous, get up and do something to relax like read a book and then go back to sleep
- If you work at night, try to get some sleep before the shift starts, try to sleep after the night shift to get some rest, and get an early sleep the next night.
The director of the Sleep Center in Surrey, Professor Dirk Jan Dyck, told the BBC: “This research reinforces the idea that short sleep is not good for us.” It is generally harmful to health, but for some people it is not harmful.
Today, doctors rarely prescribe hypnotics, as they can have strong side effects and can even be addictive.
