Sleep Efficiency Analysis and Trends: Comparing Countries and Age Groups

This indicator is one of the priorities when analyzing its quality, as it is monitored by calculating the ratio between the actual sleep time and the total time spent in bed every night.

In Portugal, sleep efficiency is 87.76%, 0.53 percentage points less than in 2022, but still above the global average – 87.49%. Only two countries in Europe – the United Kingdom and the Netherlands – recorded an average lower than the world average. However, there is a decreasing trend in sleep efficiency in all countries.

Young people are the most affected by inconsistent standards that necessarily affect their quality. This deficit, calculated by the difference between the amount of sleep during the week versus weekends, is higher in people in their 20s, who reveal almost twice as much sleep debt (49 minutes) than people in their mid-20s. 70 years old (29 minutes). By region, Asia has the smallest sleep deficit, with 41 minutes, while Latin America has the largest, with 47 minutes. Globally, people sleep, on average, 44 minutes more on the weekend.

What is the participants’ sleep animal?

Worldwide, the majority of individuals identified more directly with the sleeping style corresponding to the “Nervous Penguin” animal, which represents, in its entirety, a third of the participants. These individuals maintain healthy circadian rhythms (commonly described as a biological clock), but frequently experience interruptions during sleep, which contributes to a decrease in sleep efficiency. This is also the sleep animal for most Portuguese people.

Contrary to the global trend, Argentina, Spain and Turkey are mostly “Sensitive Hedgehogs”, which means they can be more active at night and sleep more during the day, like a regular nap period.

Older users recorded higher percentages of “Cautious Deer”, which means a person with a shorter sleep duration and longer wake times. Almost 40% of people in their 70s had the “Cautious Deer” as their sleep animal, which is almost ten times more than people in their 20s.

People in their 20s also have a significant expression in “Moles Averse to the Sun”. This category includes all individuals who have problems with sleep consistency, which have become increasingly prevalent as the age demographic also decreases.
