Sleep disorders: Barmer: Massive increase in sleep disorders in MV

Over the past ten years, the number of people suffering from sleep disorders in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania has increased massively. As can be seen from an analysis now published by the Barmer health insurance company, around 120,000 insured people in the country were extrapolated to the total population in 2023 and corresponding diagnoses were made. Ten years ago there were almost 83,000 people affected, said the replacement fund in Schwerin.

“Sleep disorders are obviously becoming more and more of a common problem,” stated Ursula Marschall, senior physician at Barmer. She cited stress, anxiety, irregular sleeping habits, health problems, but also the use of electronic devices before going to bed as the causes. The time change this weekend could be another factor that has a negative impact on sleep – at least temporarily.

Sleep disorders with health consequences

The consequences of sleep disorders include a lack of concentration, excessive irritability or a weakened immune system. “In the long term, sleepless nights can increase the risk of psychological problems, cardiovascular diseases and metabolic disorders. Healthy sleep hygiene, stress management and, if necessary, medical help are therefore crucial in order to sleep as well and peacefully as possible,” explained the doctor.

According to her, sleep disorders occur particularly in old age. In 2023, around 12 percent of people over the age of 60 would have struggled with sleep disorders. However, there were particularly high increases in the group of 30 to 39 year olds, with the proportion of those affected doubling from 2 to 4 percent.

According to its own information, Barmer has around 265,000 insured people in MV. This corresponds to around 17 percent of all people with statutory health insurance in the country.
