The duo are coming off their three-year hiatus and transitioning from the name Slaves to Soft Play, effective immediately.
Slaves, which has been around since 2012, released its latest album in 2019. Since then, it’s been more or less radio silence from Laurie Vincent and Isaac Holman. Everyone is working on their own musical project. When the duo released their first album, Are you satisfied?, in 2015, their name raises questions and criticisms. Right now, the group defends its name. Then, on Dec. 9, 2022, the duo shared their thoughts on the latter on Instagram. “When we called our group Slavesit was only to refer to the routine of daily life,” it read.
“As young people, we responded to criticism of the name from a place of fear and advocacy. Feeling cornered, our own pride drove us to fight for a name we weren’t even sure we wanted anymore. At times we felt like our band name defined us and we were afraid of what might happen if we changed it,” he adds.
They have since realized that although their original intention wasn’t to hurt, the name Slaves it was problematic. “In our time, we think it is very important for people to change and make improvements no matter how far behind they are. The name no longer represents who we are as people or what our music represents. We want to sincerely apologize to anyone we have offended,” wrote the duo, who now call themselves Soft game.
As for their return to the stage, the duo says there have been times in recent years where they’ve questioned simply “setting foot on a stage together again,” they admit in their post. At the end of their text, they write: “We are very happy to be back together and are excited about what the future holds for us. »
