Slave trader statue overthrown in England and thrown into the river during demonstration against racism – Observer

A statue of 17th century slave trader Edward Colston was smashed by protesters in the English city of Bristol on Sunday in protest against racism in the UK.

Protesters from this town in southwest England overthrew this bronze monument, erected in 1895 in the city center, and took it through the streets to the port.

The statue of Edward Colston (1636-1721), a benefactor of the city who obtained his wealth from the slave trade and exploitation, had previously been the subject of controversy, with a citizen already asking for his removal.

In several cities in the United Kingdom, thousands of people demonstrated for the repulsion of the murder of the African American George Lloyd by a policeman, on May 25 in the United States.

In London, Glasgow, Birmingham and Manchester, despite the use of gloves and masks, many did not respect the requests of the Government and the police, who warned of the danger of the concentration of groups with more than six people, as a measure to combat the spread of new coronavirus.

From Budapest to Madrid, passing through Rome, tens of thousands of people made their voices heard in the wave of protest that ignited the death of a black citizen asphyxiated by a white policeman in Minneapolis, United States.

In Thailand, where an anti-racist demonstration had been banned, more than 200 people participated in a virtual protest, logging on to the ‘Zoom’ application to watch videos about the ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement.

On Saturday, 14 people were arrested and at least 10 members of the security forces were injured in London, following a clash at the end of the demonstration, which was attended by singer Madonna.

Across Europe, demonstrations against racism have been gaining momentum.
