Slaughterhouses file summary proceedings against NVWA in the run-up to the sacrificial feast

The slaughterhouses require that the NVWA still gives them permission to slaughter in the context of the sacrificial feast. However, according to the NVWA, the companies fall short in their action plan to be able to comply with the corona rules.

The summary proceedings, which will be brought before the court in The Hague on Monday, were brought by slaughterhouse Henk Worst from Nijkerk and the Islamic slaughterhouse Ipekci in Harderwijk. An NVWA spokesperson says that they should not serve as slaughterhouses at the upcoming sacrificial feast. It is urgent, because the sacrificial feast starts on Friday.

Defects

Slaughterhouses must take additional measures during the sacrificial feast to prevent the spread of the coronavirus and submit a plan of action to the NVWA in advance.

The plans were rejected at eight slaughterhouses, according to the NVWA spokesperson, because they were not submitted or were submitted late or showed flaws. According to her, they can apply for regular slaughter during that period (not in the context of the sacrificial feast).

Sacrifice feast

During the sacrificial feast, many sheep, goats and cattle are slaughtered in a short time with a neck cut and without anesthesia. The meat of these animals is often collected directly and unrefrigerated.

This year, carcasses of recently slaughtered animals may only be handed over from the slaughterhouse to customers outside under strict conditions. The slaughterhouse must ensure that people do not come to the slaughterhouse at the same time, but have to come and collect their meat. The distance rule of 1.5 meters applies both inside and outside the slaughterhouse.

NVWA announced additional audits this week to ensure that businesses and consumers adhere to animal welfare, food safety and anti-coronavirus regulations.

A lot of demand

Because of the travel restrictions, many Muslims will stay at home this year and the need for meat for the sacrificial feast is extra high, says chairman Frans Wouters of the Association of Slaughterhouses and Meat Processing Companies (VSV). He says it is important to create as many slaughter places as possible for the Muslims who want to make a sacrifice in the Netherlands.

“Henk Worst slaughters about 700 lambs on normal Fridays, which is a solution for 7000 Muslims. On such an important day, he should not give at home and disappoint mosques. If the NVWA had communicated better about the requirements in advance, we would have can occur. “
