The Ministry of the Environment, the Fight against Climate Change, Wildlife and Parks is currently studying the possibility of allowing bloodhound handlers to carry a firearm in order to kill certain species fatally wounded by a hunter.

This analysis follows a pilot project that was set up by the Quebec government in 2022. The goal was to allow bloodhound handlers, on certain specific occasions, to shorten the suffering of animals injured by a hunter. The president of the Association des conduites de chiens de sang du Québec, Sébastien Deschênes, looks back on this pilot project:

The Association des conduites de chiens de sang du Québec (ACCSQ) has sent a brief to provide its comments on this matter. It is asking, among other things, to allow the use of a rifle rather than a shotgun to alleviate the suffering of game.

Sébastien Deschênes provides an update on the steps underway in Quebec:

Currently, the association has three bloodhound handlers registered for the Outaouais region. It says it trains about a hundred new handlers each year and invites anyone interested in joining its ranks to contact it via its website.
