Wingfoil surfing off Sylt at the Masters
After the wind on Sylt was too weak for official races on the first day, the second day of racing brought the hoped-for wind for the California Wingfoil Masters on the island. At 11 to 15 knots, five complete slaloms were held for the Youth & Junior and Senior Fleets. In the men’s category, Lucas Matthes (Core) is in the lead, ahead of Kjeld Hansen (Naish) and Julius Manthei (Duotone). The best woman is currently Jelena Duwe (Slingshot, Rideengine), who is keeping Nele Fischenbeck (F-One) and Tania Tammling (Armstrong, Duotone) at a distance. In the junior category, Jonas Manthei (Duotone) is in the lead, ahead of Moritz Schlicksbier (Duotone) and Joost Brendel (Duotone).
Lucas Matthes won three of the races. Since every rider can delete his two worst results after five races, his fifth and 13th place are irrelevant in the remaining races. Matthes leads the results list after day two of the Sylter Wingfoil Masters with the ideal score of 0.0. In second place is Kjeld Hansen, who won one race. With three second places and one third place, he has 4.0 points. Just one place behind is Julius Manthei with 5.0 points. Manthei was also able to win one race. A second and three third places give him a solid starting point in the fight for the podium at the Sylter Surf Cup.
Jelena Duwe impressed in the women’s category, currently leading the women’s rankings with a sensational fourth place overall. Nele Fischenbeck follows in second place with seventh place overall. The third woman is Tania Tammling, just one place behind in eighth place.
Jonas Manthei dominated the Youth & Junior Fleet. He secured three race wins ahead of Westerland and scored points with a third and a fifth place. He leads the Youth and Junior rankings with the ideal score of 0.0. Moritz Schlicksbier follows in second place, having secured a race win up to fifth place. He currently has 5.0 points in the results list. Third-placed Joost Brendel only scored one point more. With three second places he secured 6.0 points. Benedikt Hiss is in fourth place as the best Junior U17, while Lasse Böhm (Reedin) completes the top 5 as the best Junior U15.
Good wind is forecast for Sylt again on Thursday. As with today, the wind is expected to increase over the course of the day, meaning that more wing foil races can be expected on Brandenburg Beach in the afternoon. The California Wingfoil Masters will run until Sunday, August 4th. Then, at 5:00 p.m., the winners of the event and, above all, the new German champions in Wingfoil Wave will be honored at the awards ceremony.
