Slack makes audio chat more informal with Discord-esque ‘Huddles’

A ‘Huddle’ is an audio channel attached to a regular text chat that users can easily jump in and out of. Such an audio chat is according to Slack more casual than a regular video or audio meeting on the platform.

The company likens the Huddle to “walking past a colleague’s desk”. They can also be helpful if you want to quickly discuss a complex topic without looking for a hole in someone’s agenda.

Slack emphasizes the “spontaneity” of a Huddle. Essentially, Discord, a similar platform aimed more at gamers and hobby groups, has been working this way for years. For example, Discord facilitates conversations while gaming.

Share short videos

In addition to the Huddles, Slack is also working on a possibility to record short videos that you can share in Slack. You can indicate in advance when you want a video to be posted.

Among other things, the company says it allows people to pre-record their meeting notes and share them during the meeting, so they don’t necessarily have to participate.

For both features, Slack offers automatic subtitles. The recording feature will be rolled out soon, according to Slack.
