Obsidian Entertainment is one of the developers to wow fans at Xbox Games Showcase today. The studio had a trailer for their small-scale survival project (pun intended) Grounded, and it showed the first expansion for The Outer Worlds. But then there was something bigger. Obsidian has revealed that she is making a big budget fantasy role-playing adventure called Avowed. It sounds like Obsidian’s take on Bethesda’s open world megahits like The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.
Avowed is an ideal project for Obsidian. The studio has worked on role-playing games like Fallout: New Vegas and Pillars of Eternity. Now he has the money to pursue the narrative and mechanical richness he’s known for, in combination with high production values.
Like many of the games Microsoft has shown today, Avowed is still a long way off. The Xbox Series X kicks off the party alongside Halo: Infinite. Obsidian’s new RPG won’t reach this window. But this is one of the many games that Microsoft is keeping as a promise of what’s to come for everyone entering the Xbox ecosystem.
