As the reservoir is emptied of water, large areas of mud with skeletons have revealed themselves, writes The Guardianwhich refers to photos and videos on social media.
Among other things, the pictures will show a skull with a helmet from the Second World War. According to the newspaper, the remains may come from soldiers who fought in the same area over 80 years ago. The Battle of the Dnieper in 1943 is considered one of the largest military battles in history, with close to 4 million soldiers.
Military expert Oleksii Kokot tells the newspaper that the remains may be German soldiers.
– German soldiers were left for dead on the battlefield. Therefore, these could actually be German soldiers, he says.
The Kakhovka dam is located in the Russian-occupied part of Ukraine, and the authorities in Kyiv accuse the Russians of blowing up the dam. Moscow denies this and accuses Ukraine of being behind it.
There are still 32 inhabited places under water in Ukrainian-controlled areas, according to the Ukrainian emergency service DSNS. Around 3,800 buildings are flooded here.
In Russian-controlled areas, 14 inhabited places are affected by the flooding.
