Skull and Bones Review: Edward Kenway’s Adventure Divides Fans

After countless postponements, Skull and Bones finally came out, but the end result is deeply divided – everyone loves Edward Kenway’s adventure.

I’ve probably already said it in other articles, but now I’ll emphasize it again: the tropical environment really makes me happy, so the sight of palm trees and sandy beaches is more than enough to compensate for the possible shortcomings of a game – of course not to infinity, the Far Cry 6, for example, despite the location, I was terribly bored by the end. As a result, Ubisoft’s other most important franchise, that is Assassin’s CreedI also expected the fourth, aptly enough Black Flag subtitled episode, about which there were skeptical voices among the fans (mostly due to the nature of the prequel and the short development time), but the company, which has seen better days, finally surprised even those who were otherwise calmly waiting for the release. Few people expected that the story of Edward Kenway would be so captivating, and it was especially surprising that the story and the missions are not even the main attraction of the program.

In addition to the atmosphere provided by the Caribbean archipelago, the pirate theme is also quite close to my heart (mostly of course Pirates of the Caribbean thanks to its first three parts), so I was especially happy when I finally got my hands on the PS4 version, which was able to enchant me in no time with its turquoise sea and its likable protagonist from the first second. Mostly the latter is what made it a huge love Black Flag, because while in the case of the previous (and subsequent) episodes, the battle between the two orders always formed the basis of the story, here we took control of a man who accidentally falls into the war spanning the ages, and anyway he just wanted to be rich . This highlight made the whole story extremely sympathetic for me, and the excellently written (and acted) characters made the point – for example, I wouldn’t forget Blackbeard’s farewell even if I were him Amnesia– the next protagonist of the series. The game was rightly criticized for starting a little slower than it should have been, but right after the world opened up, everyone forgot about the not-so-lethal start.

There were as many things to do in this world as there are stars in the sky, and although it is true that most of them moved along the lines of “erasing the map” characteristic of Ubisoft (unfortunately) since then, thanks to the surrounding area (and my OCD) I didn’t get tired of performing the side activities until the crew list. I particularly liked, for example, the search for hidden treasures and the assassin missions, but I also enjoyed looking for bottle mails – but I really hated combing through the papers containing sailor’s notes, because “thanks” to the older system, the control was not really at the height of the situation. The atmosphere itself was even rarer on land, as all the major cities (for example, Havana or Tortuga) had a unique atmosphere, and the graphics are still extremely beautiful (which is why I don’t even understand why it should be renovated), so I also spent a lot of time wandering aimlessly on the streets and watching the actions of the rum-enthused NPCs. THE Black Flag however, it quickly reveals what it is Assassin’s Creed 3there was only one extra, which here forms the backbone of the gameplay: navigation.

And this is why both the profession and the players put the subject of our latest review on a pedestal, because the driving of our “lady” named Jackdraw turned out to be so enjoyable that it would have carried the entire production on its back even if everything else turned out to be mediocre – luckily it didn’t happen that way. Even during a simple cruise, I wanted to slap the pirate hat on my head and sing the catchy songs with the crew (well, the latter sometimes happened), but the sea battles are what crowned the experience – and from which the article inspiring Skull and Bones also sprouted. Even for the umpteenth time, it was an amazing experience to blow up the cannons, tickle (or just banish to the bottom of the sea) the ships, and then watch us pocket the fruits of our well-deserved work.

I would especially like to highlight the encounters with legendary ships, during which I felt as if I was facing the main enemy of a soulslike game – by which I mean that most of the time it took a few runs before I managed to escape the encounter with my skin intact. With the upgradeability of Jackdraw, the team also provided motivation to wave a cannon at the vehicles cruising on the water, so if the addictive combat system itself might not have been enough to actively pursue the “craft” chosen by the protagonist, then the difficulty level itself forced us to “connect” with those around us as often as possible. Personally, I also went with the underwater sequences, as they cleverly added color to the gameplay, but I like animals even if they are made of pixels, so I only indulged in hunting as long as it was necessary to upgrade the equipment.

Of course the Black Flag it wasn’t flawless either, since the low-level, two-button combat system (that is, the land-based one), for example, quickly dissuaded me from face-to-face combat, and because of the already mentioned control, I often felt the urge to bring the TV and the controller. There were a little more collectables than needed, but even with that, it kept me engaged for about 60-70 hours (it was a long time ago, I don’t remember exactly), all without getting bored to death – this is not really the case with current Ubisoft titles I can tell you. Perhaps it says everything about the quality of the program that, even though it was published in 2013, the recently launched, dubbed AAAA, essentially beats the hell out of all areas Skull and Bones, even though the developers could have built on solid concrete foundations, and there were no problems with the financial background either. It’s a good question, where did this project go wrong, in any case, it was good to remind us again of that Assassin’s Creed– game, which has become (one of) the best of the franchise, because in terms of its theme and story, it is extremely far from its main conflict.
