Four years ago, one of the teams at the celebration of the centenary of Prievidza football was called by a familiar nickname: Škrťovci. On October 11th, the duel of the 3rd round of the Slovnaft Cup between OFK Baník Lehota pod Vtáčnik and FC Spartak Trnava will take place in Prievidza, as a one-time detached home environment.
Filip Škrteľ is 21 years old and has first league experience from FK Pohronie Žiar nad Hronom Dolná Ždaňa. He came to Lehota pod Vtáčnik in the summer from Spartak Myjav and already managed to score four goals in III. league and two in the cup.
The young man’s father, Roman Škrteľ, won a double in the 1998/99 season with Slovan Bratislava. Father’s cousin Martin Škrtel said goodbye to his professional career by winning the Slovnaft Cup 2021/22 in the jersey of Trnava, for which he is now an advisor, ambassador and honorary head of the boiler.
Family connections hardly clicked even for the fan who treated Škrtel with malignant abominations last February at Tehelno polí. This is also why the slogan Together we can do a lot is associated with the Slovnaft Cup for the second season. The campaign encourages decent cheering.

SHOSHON AT HEART
Filip Škrtel’s preference among nickel league players is neither white nor red and black: “I’m a yellow-green Shoshone at heart.” The fact that he finished under Dubno when they didn’t count on him doesn’t change anything: “Žilina raised me as a footballer and a person, I lived there from the age of twelve until adulthood.”
The accompanying narrative for Filip will therefore be the looming confrontation with former Žilina teammate Ján Bernát, who came to Trnava at the beginning of September on a one-year loan from the Belgian KWC Westerlo: “For me, it increases the specificity of that cup match, I’m looking forward to it all the more.”
They were a good team at the academy. Their sporting fates have taken them to different addresses, but they are still in active contact with Adrián Mojžiš or Marián Tandar, and they perceive each other at least through social networks.

TWO HOUSES, TWO ZONES
However, the leitmotif will, of course, concern a famous close relative seventeen years older: “Martin will definitely not let the match between Lehoty and Trnava slip away.” At the same time, the former youth representative Filip Škrteľ hopes that he himself will be fully fit by then after a minor injury, for which he finally did not participate in the Regions’ Cup in Zlaté Moravce last week, although he appeared in the ZsFZ nomination.

And how is it actually with the confusing difference mollusk in the last name? The stopper with a past in St. Petersburg, Liverpool or Fenerbahce is the only member of the family without him. Simply, shortly before Christmas 1984, the registry office was probably thinking about the tree: by mistake, it was not entered in his birth certificate. “Also, on the field, we have always been Škrťovci – that makes the difference disappear,” laughs the Lehota pod Vtáčnik striker.
Similarly, he sneers when crossing out the possibility that the people of Trnava will pass his chances out of habit: “We don’t have names on the jerseys… But maybe they will appear there for this duel, let’s be surprised.” Martin’s parents’ house in Ráztočn, a little east of Prievidza, is two steps away from Filip’s.
Two zones down, a famous relative was moving on the field. Comparisons in terms of post for post therefore do not happen, others do: “Sometimes I get comments that I’m being pushed around and that if it weren’t for Martin, I wouldn’t be playing where I’m playing. In my opinion, it’s quite over the line, especially now that I’m in the third league.”
HEALTHY HUMILITY
An attractive direct fight came into consideration the year before last autumn, when Filip was in Pohroní and Martin was playing his farewell season in big football in Trnava. It didn’t happen: “From Žilina U19, I didn’t go to Žiar thinking that I would be regularly used as a support – I was supposed to develop. In retrospect, I admit that I wasn’t quite ready for senior football yet.”
At the same time, however, he thinks that objectively he deserved more space than two substitutions for a few minutes: “In a short period of time, the team had several coaches and each one had their own concept: one wanted to work with me, another preferred more seasoned players…”
Filip Škrteľ was not even on the bench on October 20, 2021, when Pohronie won 1:0 in Lehot pod Vtáčnik in the 4th round of the cup. Believe it or not: it is still OFK Baník’s last home loss across all competitions. Just six years ago in the spring, only the sixth division club first fought its way up two levels in two seasons.
Then, in June of this year, he rejoiced at the move to the third rung in the hierarchy. Currently, after six rounds, the wards of Igor Slezák III are leading. league group West with a record of 5-1-0 and a score of 14:5.
“I think it is right that we are not under pressure. We don’t announce that we are going to win the league, we don’t have excessively big eyes and strong words. We go into it with healthy humility and respect. We want to continue what we are doing, as it has been paying off for us so far. At the end of the season, we will evaluate whether it was successful,” states Filip Škrteľ.

DETERMINED TO SACRIFICE SOMETHING
Between engagements in Pohron and Myjava, he had anabasis in Žarnovica and Kalna nad Hronom. Personal ambitions and setting are in synergy with Miner: “We are an excellent team that has its own qualities. Everyone either went through an academy like me, or has experience in the respective leagues.”
He is doing well, after two months of stimulation he does not hide his satisfaction: “I firmly believe that it is a springboard for me. I have a goal and I submit to it, I am determined to sacrifice something.”
Three times a week, he travels a little over twenty kilometers from Ráztočn to training in Lehot pod Vtáčnik. Unlike his teammates, who work or study alongside football, he devotes all his free time to individual preparation.
“I didn’t have to deal with anything in this regard in the second division Myjava. For a newcomer to the third league, the conditions are, understandably, more modest, and it would not be possible to make ends meet without civilian employment in the long term. But I knew what I was getting into. I only work from what I get from the club,” describes Filip.

TRNAVA WAS STARTED BY HIS FATHER
Last year in August, Trnava, as the defender of the trophy, almost fell in fourth division Boleráz. She learned her lesson and entered the cup this time with an 8-0 triumph on the ground of the fifth league. He wants an unprecedented clean hat-trick in the Slovnaft Cup.
“After seeing them in Šurany in full force with the league squad, I am convinced that they will not underestimate anything against us. They must be aware that with each passing round, more serious opponents come. In addition, they have an overview of how the third league is gaining in quality. After all, in the previous season, their ‘farm’ from Malženice played in it,” reminds Filip Škrteľ.
In the 1985/86 season, on a neutral ground in Prievidza, Spartak succeeded in the final of the Slovak Cup against Žilina (1:0). In the center of the Horná Nitra region, however, more recently, he scored twice in the I. League with the local Baník and Petrimex, respectively, 0:3. It was in 1993 and 1998. In the second case, in front of 8,532 spectators, Filip’s father Roman opened the score with a header shortly before his transfer from Prievidza to Slovan.
