Customers who buy a new Škoda have until now been used to their new car having functions depending on which specific price variant they choose. However, Škoda seems to be joining the ranks of car companies that they will use an on-demand approach, or on demand. One of the first models to be affected is the new Škoda Kodiaq, which was recently presented to the public in Berlin.
Will you buy navigation?
The new Škoda Kodiaq will not primarily have navigation, you will most likely have to download it yourself for a fee, or activate. This approach is associated with a new version of infotainment referred to as MIB4which will be characterized by a non-stop Internet connection.
In the case of navigation, Škoda points out that a significant number of people do not use this function at all and prefer maps for Android or Apple iOS. However, the change in access does not only apply to navigation, customers will be able to pay for, for example, adaptive cruise control or automatic dimming of the lights. It will be possible to order these functions at any time during the use of the car, as the cars will of course be ready for their use.

One time fee or subscription?
Škoda has not yet decided whether it will demand a one-time fee, or whether drivers will subscribe to this or that function on a monthly basis. Škoda has to be quite careful with the introduction of new news. In the past, BMW tried something similar, and at the moment when the automaker started to demand seat heating subscription, customers reacted so negatively to it that BMW had to cancel the subscription altogether. On the other hand, it turns out that especially electric car owners use the on-demand system quite naturally. To a certain extent, this is something we will have to get used to.
