The Škoda Citigo electric mini-car was sold out in the Czech Republic in the middle of the year, when this year’s quota of 200,000 cars for the domestic market was exhausted.
It has already been sold out all over Europe and the smallest Škoda apparently will not get another chance. “Citigo is out of the game – as far as Europe is concerned, we are sold out. There will be no direct successor to this model and we do not expect a car of this size in the future,” the portal quotes Autoforum.cz Sales and Marketing Director of Škoda Auto Alain Favey.
Although the production of a small electric car intended for the city makes sense at first glance, it was a loss-making project for Škoda. Due to the very expensive production, she suffered on every piece sold. And so the management decided to unequivocally prefer the much larger Enyaq built on the modular MEB platform, which the Volkswagen Group developed especially for larger electric cars. “Once there is a version of the MEB platform for smaller cars, then a version from Škoda will arrive. But I don’t know anything about such plans,” Favey added.
Citigo has long been speculated about at the end. The petrol version, which has been produced in Bratislava since 2011 and cost almost 200,000 crowns, first took it away. It seemed for a while that it would return to production, but at the beginning of this year, Škoda definitely confirmed that petrol had to give way to electricity.
Škoda started the pre-sale of the first series-produced electric car Citigo-e iV a year ago, set the price of the basic version at 429,900 crowns and attracted customers for an annual free charge for the first 500 people. “By launching pre-orders for the Czech market, we are sending a clear message to the public that we are serious about eMobility,” said Luboš Vlček, head of the Škoda Auto Czech representation at the time.
But now the carmaker has a new flagship for the electric era – the Enyaq SUV introduced this week, almost three times more expensive. Little Citigo had to back down. In addition to the fully electric Enyaqu, only the plug-in hybrids Superb iV and Octvia iV will remain in the offer of electrified models. There is talk that Karoq and Kodiaq will get a plug-in hybrid version over time.
