Škoda began manufacturing battery systems for electric vehicles in Mladá Boleslav

In the future, around 250 employees can assemble more than 250,000 battery systems for the MEB platform per year on the newly built production line. In addition to Škoda cars, these systems will also be used in other models of the Volkswagen, Audi, Seat and Cupra brands built on the MEB platform.

“By starting production of battery systems for the MEB platform, we will produce an absolutely key component at the heart of our company. We have thus achieved another goal for a successful transformation towards electromobility, ”says Michael Oeljeklaus, Member of the Board of Directors.

The headquarters of the Czech carmaker is the only place in Europe outside Germany where battery systems for the MEB platform will be manufactured. The smallest version with eight modules has a capacity of 55 kWh, the middle variant with nine modules then over 62 kWh. The largest battery with 12 modules will store 82 kWh.

But it’s not just about batteries. In addition to the modules, which always have 24 cells, the components of the battery system for the MEB platform also include a battery box with integrated cooling system, a battery control system and the necessary electrical connections.

Of course, the systems also travel to the Škoda Enyaq iV, the brand’s first full-fledged electric car, which began production in 2020 as the first car on the MEB platform on the same line as conventional cars.

Since the autumn of 2019, high-voltage traction batteries for plug-in hybrids have been created here, including the Superbu iV, Octavia iV and other cars of the concern with this drive.
