Škoda Auto now has around 800 redundant employees in its production plants in the Czech Republic. The unions are trying to keep them as much as possible.

The company has stopped recruiting, only special professions are accepted as a substitute for fluctuation or professions for new trends in e-mobility, connectivity and other new directions. This was stated by the weekly Škodovácký odborář.

According to the unions, raw materials originating mainly from Russia and Ukraine and also components produced from these raw materials by the supply sector are starting to be noticeably missing for production. “Not only Škoda, but also the entire automotive industry depends on them. Few people know that carbon black, for example, is one of the most important products from the Russian Federation, they are necessary for the production of tires,” the unions said.

The company has previously announced that the number of employees should be reduced by two percent, which, according to the unions, can be managed by natural fluctuations or transfers of employees between individual workplaces. Due to the situation caused by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, exacerbated by the lack of chips in the on-board electronics or a fire at one of the suppliers who supplied door panels for the Octavia model, Škoda cancels a number of shifts.
“Due to the disruption of cable harnesses from Ukraine, we have stopped production of the Enyaq iV model. Our experts are working hard to find available alternatives and resume supplies. Škoda Auto spokeswoman Gabriela Slabihoudková told ČTK on Wednesday.

“We have always talked about turbulence, but now we are experiencing a tornado and what one looks at is more expensive, and it is uncertain whether we can manage everything through savings, pricing and at the same time reach customers waiting for our cars for a year,” said the unions.
