Skittles candy, known for its slogan “Taste the rainbow,” is facing backlash from consumers over its new packaging that features the phrase “Black Trans Lives Matter.” Some consumers are now calling for a boycott of the candy company, criticizing its “woke” approach to supporting the LGBTQ community.
Skittles, a product from the Wrigley Company, a division of Mars, Inc., has dedicated a section on its website titled “SKITTLES Pride” to amplify stories within the LGBTQ+ community. The company collaborated with the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation to create LGBTQ-friendly designs for its Pride Packs.
While most of the new packaging designs celebrate pride, one in particular has raised concerns. It features a few kids on skateboards riding on a halfpipe with phrases like “skate & live,” “joy is resistance,” and “black trans lives matter” written on it.
This packaging has sparked criticism from some consumers who believe that Skittles is trying to turn children into activists for the Black Lives Matter movement and LGBTQ+ rights. Online users have called for a boycott of Skittles, claiming that the company is pushing a political agenda.
However, not all consumers are opposed to Skittles’ approach. Some argue that the company’s slogan, “Taste the rainbow,” aligns with its support for the LGBTQ+ community.
This is not the first time a company’s support for social causes has faced backlash. Bud Light, for example, faced criticism when it partnered with trans activist Dylan Mulvaney, who celebrated a year of identifying as a woman. The partnership drew harsh criticism from conservatives, including singer Kid Rock, and Bud Light’s sales have since declined.
Skittles has not yet responded to requests for comment on the controversy. As the debate continues, it remains to be seen how this backlash will impact the candy company’s sales and reputation.
