Slovakian woman Petra Vlhova graduated from St. Moritz training only, she didn’t show up at the start of the first of the two descents. Of her rivals in the struggle for the great crystal globe, the American ran out Mikaela Shiffrinová in 6th place and the Swiss Lara Gutová-Behramiová on the 8th step. On Saturday there will be another race in the same place, on Sunday there is a super-G scheduled.
In difficult conditions with poor visibility and snow, Curtoniová used the low starting number 2 and the still relatively well groomed track. She appeared on stage for the first time in the season. She enjoyed the win for the third time in her career, the second time at the convention. She managed to triumph in the fastest alpine discipline in Bansko in January 2022.
The defending champion of the small crystal ball, Goggiová, put on a tenth of the suit and started after a short break caused by the fall and injury of one of the organizers. At the top of the track she made a mistake when she overattacked one of the gates and went off the ideal line. Also, touching her door resulted in a hand injury. Even so, she managed to secure first place in the downhill standings ahead of Suterová, who recorded her fourth podium finish of the season.
“I like it here, I practically live on the other side of these mountains and I was here for the first time on the podium in a World Cup. I also like the track, it’s demanding, you have to go a lot from memory. But tomorrow will be a new day and a totally different time.” Curtoniová, who was not accompanied on stage by Goggiová, said at the finish line for the FIS.
Immediately after the race, she headed for medical tests, which showed a broken two fingers. Curtoni’s previous triumph came in January’s super-G, and even then Goggi was injured in a fall. “It’s like a curse. I only thrive when something happens to her. But I don’t do it on purpose, I swear.” pointed out a 31-year-old Italian woman according to AP.
