Time for the Olympic competition on the large hill in Zhangjiakou. The Biało-Czerwoni did not impress in training and qualifying, but on a normal course, Dawid Kubacki proved that everything is possible in the Olympic competition. Before Saturday’s competition the Norwegians and the Japanese Ryoyu Kobayashi were considered great favorites, but the Poles who were “crouching” were not going to lay down their arms.
In the trial series the best was Kobayashi, who won gold on the normal hill a week ago. The Slovenes also shone, taking three of the top five places. Kamil Stoch came out decently, placing 11th. 13. Paweł Wąsek made his best jump at the Olympic facilities in Zhangjiakou. Dawid Kubacki once again did not impress, and Piotr Żyła decided to put everything on one card, giving up his jump in the trial series.
Sensational level of the first series! Firecracker Stoch!
In the first competition series, Stoch showed himself from a great side. The three-time Olympic champion achieved as much as 137.5 m, which, with sensational notes for style, gave him the fourth position at the halfway point of the competition. Kamil lost only 0.4 points to the third Timi Zajc.
The rest of the Polish team also advanced to the second round, but they were much worse than our champion. Although Piotr Żyła jumped 134 m, it only gave him the 15th position. Dawid Kubacki (131 m) was classified in the 25th place, and Paweł Wąsek (129 m), who made his debut at the Olympics, was ranked 28th.
Ryoyu Kobayashi was in the lead after the first round with a jump of 142 m, setting a new facility record. The second was Marius Lindvik (140.5 m), and the third was Timi Zajc (139.5 m). Kamil Stoch, however, lurked right behind the backs of his rivals.
Results after the first competition series:
The medal was so close …
The second series started excellently for Poles. Better and better on the large hill in Zhangjiakou, Wąsek achieved 134.5 m, which meant that he significantly improved his position after the first round.
Kubacki fared a bit worse. 131.5 m was not enough to overtake Wąska and a few other rivals, who were behind Dawid after the first jump. So we were left to wait for the trials of Żyła and Stoch.
The former did on average, scoring 131 m. Unfortunately, the other competitors, who placed in the second “10” after the first round, did better, and Piotrek fell to a further position.
Stoch scored 133.5 m and unfortunately did not manage to overtake Karl Geiger, who was attacking from a further position. The Olympic champion was Norwegian Marius Lindvik, and the silver medal went to Ryoyu Kobayashi.
