The skeleton of a Gorgosaurus will be auctioned in New York at the end of July. It is the first skeleton of such a dinosaur ever offered for auction and can fetch up to eight million dollars (about 7.8 million euros), auction house Sotheby’s announced Tuesday.

According to scientists, Gorgosaurus, which probably lived more than 70 million years ago, was related to and resembled Tyrannosaurus, but was significantly smaller. Most of the Gorgosaurus fossils have been found in Canada, and all of the remains discovered so far are in public collections. That makes the approximately three meters high and almost seven meters long skeleton, which was discovered in 2018 in the US state of Montana and will be auctioned on July 28, the first to go into private ownership, the auction house said.

Just in May, a skeleton of the dinosaur genus Deinonychus antirrhopus was auctioned in New York for about $12 million, and in 2020, a skeleton of a Tyrannosaurus rex fetched more than $30 million. However, many experts are critical of auctioning scientifically valuable skeletons.
