Skeleton of Gorgosaurus auctioned for $6.1 million

According to Sotheby’s, it is one of the most expensive dinosaurs ever sold. Yet there is still a big difference with the Tyrannosaurus Rex, of which another specimen sold for 31.8 million dollars in 2020.

The Gorgosaurus, nearly 3 meters high and 6.7 meters long, was discovered in 2018 in the Judith River, a tributary of the Missouri, in the US state of Montana. Since then, the skeleton has been in private hands. The auction house estimated the value between $5 and $8 million due to the “remarkable condition” of the skeleton. It is currently unclear who the buyer is.

The Gorgosaurus or ‘savage lizard’, which like the T-Rex belongs to the family of the Tyrannosauridae, lived in the Late Cretaceous and died out about 77 million years ago.
