Skating for Sobriety: Man Completes 3,000-Mile Cross-Country Trip on Skateboard for Addiction Awareness

Chad Caruso skated from coast to coast.

He recently completed a 3,000-mile cross-country trip on his skateboard, which took him on a 57-day journey from the Pacific Ocean in Venice Beach, California, to the Atlantic Ocean in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Caruso, a New York resident who organized the ride to raise funds for addiction awareness, now holds the Guinness World Record for the fastest cross-country on a hand-held skateboard for a man.

And the skateboard held up. Caruso, however, needed to replace his shoes halfway through the trip.

“For me, this was a bigger success than I could have imagined,” Caruso said while documenting the trip on his YouTube channel. “On the right track. A couple of roads here and there, a couple of mishaps, but nothing really happened. Everything worked out. Packed just what I needed. Everything went very well. Couldn’t have asked for a better trip.”

Caruso launched a Go Fund Me campaign on February 6, announcing that he was “skating 3,000 miles across the US.” He has nearly reached his goal of $50,000, with 25 percent of the money raised donating to Natural High, a nonprofit organization. drug prevention non-profit that helps young people find a passion and develop skills.

Caruso credits skateboarding for his sobriety.

“I’ve been sober for six years and doing so has completely changed my life for the better,” Caruso wrote in Go Fund Me. “I wouldn’t have been able to try this cross country skate without the energy and focus that sobriety has given me. The goal of this fundraiser is to highlight the importance of having something exciting in life to focus on.”

Caruso began the trip on March 24 after flying to California and completed it on May 19 at Neptune Park in Virginia, where he was greeted by a huge crowd. He finished the trip by picking up his skateboard, running down the beach and jumping fully clothed into the Atlantic Ocean.

“At first…I didn’t know what to expect, there were so many challenges to face,” Caruso told reporters. “But once I started doing it, I was in the zone. It felt like second nature after that.”
