The House of Representatives held a sixth session to elect a president of the republic, but failed in its mission, so the quorum-missed scenario repeated itself after the status quo remained as it was. And with the balance of power remaining intact in parliament, and at a time when each party is barricading itself behind its own candidate and seeking to break the contract before his accession to the presidency, despite his certainty of the difficulty of the matter, he has started talking about a consensual candidate who resonates in the echoes of the council, albeit timidly.
On the basis of this principle, some deputies, including independents, see the best and only solution to the presidential dilemma in the consensual choice of the president, and some of them have begun to name names to take the pulse, even if the conditions are not yet ripe internal for the opposition team to abandon the representative Michel Moawad, nor the team for the reluctance for his candidate without warning.
The two parties in the House of Representatives will surrender
In this context, Representative Ghassan Skaf believes that “a consensual president is the solution in the light of a divided parliament, which creates a negative balance leading to the scene we are observing today”. He points out that “agreeing on a basket of middle names is still better than the open duel that takes place and the quorum is blown”.
In an interview with “An-Nahar”, he points out that “haunting the ‘challenger’ candidates (Moawad and Franjieh) will mean that the quorum will continue to fly and sessions will be halted, and the situation could continue as it has been for years , and this is what happened previously, knowing that the country is in a state of complete paralysis, and at all levels”.
However, Skaf believes that “neither side has the audacity to back down and give up the challenger candidate they support, and then move towards the moderate person option, but both sides will revert to this option when they lose hope and discover the inability to reach their candidate.”
What’s in the names?
In this context, Skaff points out, “Moawad and Franjieh have to prove that they are consensual candidates, as they say. If one of them succeeds, then let him be elected president of the republic through a democratic process. This way for other consensus candidates”.
As for the names that may enjoy relative compatibility, Skaf names a few, Nassif Hitti, Salah Hanin, Jihad Al-Azaour, and believes these and other names may be consensual, as do each side in the House of Representatives he must propose a name to discuss with the other, and from here we underline the importance of dialogue and ask for it.
