BRATISLAVA – The footballers of SK Slovan Bratislava will start the performance of Slovak clubs in the new season of European competitions. In the opening match of the 1st preliminary round of the Champions League, they will welcome the reigning Luxembourg champion FC Swift Hesperange on Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. at the Brick Field.
“Belasí” have had a successful training, in which they did not hesitate even once and closed the program of four duels with a score of 11:2. In the warm-up for a duel against an opponent from Luxembourg, they won 4:1 over Romanian Rapid Bucharest.
“Everything is going towards the preparation for Wednesday. We showed very good things in the last preparatory match against Rapid Bucharest, but there is always room for improvement. It was still a preparation, so I would not draw short conclusions.” stated for the ŠK Slovan Bratislava website after the final preparatory meeting, the head coach of the Slovak champion, Vladimír Weiss
Well prepared in their heads
Slovan also succeeded in the beginning of the training against FC Universitatea Kluž (3:0), followed by a triumph over the Slovenian NK Olimpija Ljubljana (2:1) and also dealt with Poland’s Wisla Plock (2:0).
“Every single opponent we played against in preparation had its own quality. I think we were well prepared in our heads, which is important. Each one of us concentrated at 100 percent, so it must also be in the competition.” said defender Lukáš Pauschek, who outlined the team’s goals before the start of the European Cup.
“The ideal scenario would be if we reach the group stage of one of the European competitions. We have to go game by game, and I think Wednesday’s game won’t be easy either.”
The duel will be led by Ukrainian chief referee Viktor Kopievsky. Rematch is scheduled for a week later on July 19 at FC Swift Hesperange (8:00 p.m.). The one advancing in the 2nd preliminary round of the LM will meet the winner of the double match between FC Urartu and HŠK Zrinjski Mostar.
The program of the 1st preliminary round starts already on Tuesday, when there are ten meetings on the program. Hungarian champions Ferencváros Budapest will face Faroe Islands champions KFI Klaksvík away.
The winner of the Polish Ekstraklasa Raków Čenstochová will welcome last year’s Estonian champion FC Flora Tallinn at home, who are in 2nd place in the ongoing year of the domestic competition, one point behind their city rival Levadia (opponent of MŠK Žilina in the 1st preliminary round of the European Conference League).
