Go Ahead Eagles’ European adventure ends in Bergen. A lightning start by the visitors was not enough to eliminate SK Brann. A lapse in attention during the build-up and a goal from a dead ball situation cost Go Ahead their lead on Thursday.
There could have been more. That was the feeling that lingered last week at Go Ahead Eagles after the goalless draw against Brann. Paul Simonis’ team had a number of chances, but failed to finish. With that in mind, Go Ahead boarded the plane to Bergen this week for the return match in the second preliminary round of the Conference League.
Long before the match, the supporters from Deventer took over in Norway’s second city. Before the start of the important match, the corteo provided special images. The joint walk to the stadium was led by the family of Kees Vierhouten, the major shareholder who passed away earlier this year.

First for Tengstedt
The next highlight took place on the grass. In the packed accommodation of Brann, Go Ahead did not lack effectiveness this time. Where both teams failed to break the spell last week, Norway scored within two minutes. Søren Tengstedt was given too much space and opened the score via the inside of the post. For the Dane, it was his first goal in Deventer service (0-1).

Brann comes alongside
The goal gave Go Ahead wings. The visitors, with Calvin Twigt in place of the suspended Enric Llansana, had done very well in the first quarter. However, Brann returned to the game just before half-time. Sloppy loss of possession by Evert Linthorst resulted in the equalizer by Bard Finne. With a hidden shot, the Brann attacker brought the game back into balance (1-1).

Brann pushes through
That was a huge setback for Go Ahead, who thought they would take the lead into the dressing room. That continued in the second half and Brann took advantage of that. Jeffrey de Lange initially prevented the home team’s second goal and processed a dangerous shot into a corner. That then flew in. Fredrik Knudsen towered above everything and everyone and found the far corner (2-1).
Go Ahead never recovered from that blow. Simonis tried to turn things around with a number of substitutions, but that proved to be in vain. Kuwait could count themselves lucky that Aune Heggebø did not end the match fifteen minutes before the end. The substitute stormed towards De Lange and also passed the goalkeeper, but the post prevented the Norwegians from scoring their third goal. The ‘all or nothing’ from the away end was to no avail.
This means that not Go Ahead, but Brann will report in the third preliminary round of the Conference League. The opponent is the winner of the two-legged match between St. Mirren and Valur Reykjavík.
