Fourteen deaths, 712 contaminations, and two weeks of nightmares. This may seem paltry today compared to the overall toll of the Covid-19 pandemic, but as of February 2020, half of the cases confirmed outside of China were on board the Diamond Princess, a cruise ship confined for two weeks in Tokyo Bay.
You might think that the story of these two trying and murderous weeks had for some time vaccinated lovers of luxury liner cruises. Especially since some attempts to revive the industry have in turn transformed into a cluster.
However, tickets for a “world cruise” whose prices start at 62,258 euros were all sold in less than three hours this Thursday, July 15. The trip, offered by Regent Seven Seas Cruises, will depart from Miami and cover 34,500 nautical miles, or 63,894 kilometers.
66 ports in 31 countries
To cover all this distance, the ship Seven Seas Mariner will leave Florida in January 2024 and will only return 132 days later. In the meantime it will be passed through 66 ports in 31 countries, including Barcelona, Cannes, Jerusalem, Abu Dhabi, Mumbai, Phuket, Sydney, Bora Bora, Hawaii and Acapulco, all while crossing the Suez and Panama canals.
Be careful, however, 62,258 euros only offers you a small cabin. To have the master suite of 185 square meters, you have to pay the trifle of 170,000 euros per person.
For an industry stricken by the pandemic, this is a new clue suggesting that wealthy tourists are ready to pull out the checkbook to get back to traveling. They seem to rather favor long-distance cruises. A forty-day Carnival cruise getaway in the Caribbean was totally sold in six hours At the beginning of july.
