He was not just cheering at home, he was taking a bicycle and going on a journey. 1600 km away from Guangzhou, the venue of the 2010 Asian Games, to Hangzhou. There were 22 of them. They cycled from Guangzhou to Hangzhou in 17 days.
There are six women in the group. All were over sixty. They cycle 100 kilometers every day.
These include businessmen, teachers, bank officials and those who had railway jobs.
The trip is in two groups. One started from Guangzhou and the other from the capital Beijing. Both are cities that have previously hosted the Asian Games. All are members of the Jing-Hang Dream Cycling Team. There are 350 people in the club. The Guangzhou group started from Tongzhou, the beginning of the Grand Canal. The group arrived in Hangzhou after passing through the historic sites of the Maritime Silk Road, including Heuchou, Chaozhou, Shangzhou, Kwazhou, Fuzhou, Wenchou, Taizhou.
Lin Min, a senior member, says that she was very worried about starting such a long journey. When the idea started two months ago, no one believed that this would be possible. At first, he trained by walking hundreds to two hundred kilometers to small towns. With that became confidence. And the joy of finishing it now.
‘It’s not age, it’s our mind that matters’ – said Lin Min and Xiang Guang, tapping out the English words. The organizers gave a grand welcome to the team that reached Hangzhou after documenting the history of the journey in pictures.
