In recent days, calls had been made from various quarters to demonstrate against the corona measures in Brussels on Sunday, but the police could only have contacted the organizers of the demonstration at the North Station. No permission was requested or given for the other demonstrations. The Brussels police was therefore ready and picked up the first demonstrators around 12.20 pm in the vicinity of the Schumanplein.
‘That involved about 15 people, some of whom had fireworks and a cutter knife’, says police spokesman Olivier Slosse. ‘A short time later a number of people were also arrested at the triumphal arch in the Cinquantenaire.’
Subsequently, a group of about two hundred people gathered in the Cinquantenaire. They kept their distance and left the park after some time. In the surrounding streets, the police arrested a number of demonstrators, but a part of the group of protesters from the Cinquantenaire also descended to the North Station, where about two hundred demonstrators also gathered.
“The rules about social distance were not properly observed and we have pointed this out several times, including through the organizers,” said the police spokesman. ‘We then dissolved that demonstration around 3.30 pm. That went without significant incidents. ‘
