Sixto Rodriguez has disappeared. The Detroit native folksinger was 81 years old. The news of his death was initially announced by the ‘Sugarman’ website and then picked up by the American media. Considered a flop in the United States, Rodriguez had become famous above all in South Africa, where his politically motivated songs against injustice were embraced by the anti-apartheid movement. During his musical career which began in the late 1960s, he recorded four albums and several singles.
His story was told in the 2012 documentary, ‘Searching for Sugar Man’, presented at the Sundance Film Festival and the following year at the Biografilm Festival in Bologna. The footage won the 2013 Oscar for best documentary. The docufilm tells how Sixto worked as a laborer for most of his existence in Detroit, as well as attempting a political career through candidacies for the city council, mayor of Detroit and representative of the state of Michigan. “I describe myself as a ‘music politician’ and feel urban rather than rural,” he explained in an interview.
