Sixth package of sanctions: pipeline oil supplies from Russia will not be embargoed

Having failed to agree on all the details of the oil embargo, EU leaders will leave the final approval of the package for later, according to the publication.

European Union is preparing the sixth package of sanctions against Russia. It turned out that the pipeline oil supplies of the aggressor country might not fall under the embargo.

This is stated in the latest draft of the EU statement on sanctions, which the agency has reviewed. Reuters.

According to the publication, EU leaders should agree at the summit that the upcoming package of sanctions should include an embargo on Russian oil imports, but exclude crude oil deliveries through the pipeline.

“The European Council agrees that the sixth package of sanctions against Russia will apply to crude oil, as well as oil products supplied from the Russian Federation to EU member states, with the temporary exception of pipeline crude oil,” Reuters quoted the draft statement as saying.

EU leaders were unable to agree on all the details of the embargo. Therefore, they will leave the final approval of the package of sanctions against the Russian Federation for later, the newspaper reports.

As Andriy Yermak, Head of the Office of the President, said in Telegramthe EU may agree on the sixth package of sanctions against Russia today:

“The EU can agree on the sixth package of sanctions today. According to the head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell, there were difficult negotiations, but decisions must be made, including an embargo on Russian oil.”

Yermak also noted that it is important for the EU to demonstrate a strong position, since the main goal of Russia is to split the unity and use it as a weakness of the European Union. He emphasized that this should not be allowed.

The sixth package of sanctions and the embargo on Russian oil: what is known

As UNIAN reported earlier, on May 4, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen introduced the sixth package of sanctions EU versus Russia, including an oil embargo and the disconnection of Sberbank from SWIFT.

At the same time, the Hungarian government said that the European Union’s plan for a complete ban on the import of Russian oil is unsatisfactory, since threatens Hungary’s energy security.

According to Bloomberg sources, EU proposes to revise oil embargo against Russia and allow Hungary and Slovakia to buy Russian oil by the end of 2024, the Czech Republic until June 2024.

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmytro Kuleba noted that the failure of all member countries of the European Union to decide on the introduction of the sixth package of sanctions with an oil embargo against the Russian Federation would be too generous a gift for President Vladimir Putin.

On May 11, the Committee of Permanent Representatives of the Member States of the European Union was unable to agree on a decision on the sixth package of sanctions against the Russian Federation.

In turn, the Prime Minister of the Netherlands Mark Rutte said that his country ready to support the embargo on Russian oil. According to him, Russian President Vladimir Putin thought he could take over Ukraine and divide the democratic forces of the world with his quick victory.
