From September 22 to September 24, the sixth International Baltic Sea Choir Competition will be held in Jurmala, with the participation of choirs from nine countries of the world – Estonia, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Germany, Ireland, Bulgaria, Indonesia and Latvia, informed the public relations of the International Baltic Sea Choir Competition. manager Inga Vasilijeva.
The mixed chamber choir “Encore” from Estonia, the mixed Finnish youth choir from Finland, the mixed choir “St Jacobs Vokalensemble” from Sweden, the Oslo University Women’s Choir from Norway, the mixed chamber choir “Alumni Heidelberg” from Germany, Dublin will compete for the title of “Grand Prix” winner. the mixed chamber choir from Ireland, the women’s choir “Voices of Orpheus” from Bulgaria, the mixed choir “Gratia Choir” from Indonesia, as well as two domestic collectives – the mixed choir “East” and the mixed choir “Norise”.
The performance of the choirs will be evaluated by a professional international jury, whose chairman will be Josu Elberdins Badiola. The jury will include Kaje Tannera, Haralds Jers, Luka Skakabaroci and Latvian composer Selga Mence.
During the competition, the participants will be evaluated in the Small Hall of the Dzintari Concert Hall in three rounds of the competition – Compulsory program and Free choice program categories. As part of the mandatory program, all choirs will perform a piece from the Romantic era, contemporary music, their country’s folk song in unison, as well as a piece specially composed for the competition – this year it will be Rihards Dubra’s opus “Hail, O Star of the Ocean” composed for the first competition. In the free-choice program, choirs have the opportunity to perform a program of their choice, showing their own sound and what works best for each.
The five choirs with the highest scores will compete in the “Grand Prix” final, while the three choirs with the highest scores will win cash prizes,
The “Grand Prix” or 1st place winner will receive the Jūrmala city cup designed by artist Ginta Grube and the grand prize – 3500 euros, the 2nd place winner – a cash prize of 2000 euros, and the 3rd place winner – 1000 euros. In addition, the best conductor’s prize in the amount of 500 euros, the best obligatory piece performer’s prize (250 euros), as well as the audience’s sympathy prize from the brand “Laima” will be presented. The best interpreter of a unison piece will receive a prize from “Musica Baltica”, the most attractive performance on stage – a prize from “Innocent PRO” and a special prize for sympathy from Dzintari Concert Hall.
The competition is held in cooperation with Jūrmala municipality, the State Culture Capital Fund and Latvijas Gāzi. Supported by “Musica Baltica” publishing house, TV24, “Dienas mediji”, restaurant “36. linija”, OLA Foundation, brand “Laima” and “Innocent PRO”.
The event will be broadcast live on TV24 and Facebook Live.
