Guessing a random imaginary number, checking knowledge about the location and structure of the planets, characteristic features of different tree species. These are some of the possibilities of various games developed with artificial intelligence by sixth graders from Burgas “Alexander Georgiev-Kodjakafaliyata” elementary school. They were presented to the Minister of Education and Science Prof. Galin Tsokov during his visit to the school.
A discussion was also organized in the school about the introduction of artificial intelligence and its study in classrooms. It was attended by the principals of Hristo Botev Secondary School in Karnobat, Svetlina Primary School in the village of Topolitsa and Burgas NEG “Goethe”, PGEE “K. Fotinov” and PGGMEE, as well as the director of the “Education” Directorate in the Municipality of Burgas, Katya Misheva.
“The Ministry of Education and Culture should start a discussion with the principals and teachers about the need to develop a program for studying the possibilities of artificial intelligence,” announced Prof. Tsokov. According to him, this can be a freely elective subject in high school or junior high school. “A number of schools in Bulgaria are already working with students in this area in various forms of extracurricular activities or in their STEM classrooms. This also raises the question – is it necessary to structure and support these efforts”, explained the minister. According to him, if we go in this direction, it should be a practically oriented discipline, in which students get to know the possibilities of different tools and their use. “Artificial intelligence will change many spheres of our social life, and it is very important to prepare children for this transformation,” said Prof. Galin Tsokov.
The participants in the meeting also shared their experience in working with artificial intelligence and various other tools to increase the digital skills of students. They also commented that the rapid changes in this area could change the way in which assessment is done and the formation of different exam materials. “New trends will not diminish the role of the teacher. On the contrary, in many areas they will make it easier, but will also increase the need for work to develop children’s social-emotional skills,” emphasized Prof. Tsokov.
The students from “Alexander Georgiev-Kodjakafaliyata” Primary School showed their other skills as well. They have created a device that measures whether we are breathing correctly, as well as an analogy to a well-known game in which the participant answers questions by pressing different possible answers and combinations with his feet. The Minister congratulated them for their consistent work and emphasized that this is exactly what should happen in classrooms – that children are engaged in what they are doing and develop skills that they can use in real life.
